Durango High School kicked off the week with a variety of opportunities for students to explore college, careers, and campus involvement.
Students interested in higher education can meet with an Admissions Representative from San Juan College today from 9:00–9:45 a.m. in the Counseling Office. Additional opportunities are coming up this week, including a visit from the U.S. Army on Wednesday, April 1, from 1:00–1:45 p.m., and Metropolitan State University of Denver on Thursday, April 2, from 1:00–1:45 p.m.
Students looking for summer opportunities have several options to consider. The Southwest Conservation Corps is hiring 10th–12th graders for outdoor summer work focused on conservation projects. Interested students can attend an informational meeting in Mr. Brink’s room on April 2 during lunch. Another opportunity is the CAUSE Internship, which offers $22 per hour, hands-on experience with local nonprofits in digital marketing, and the potential to earn .5 elective credit. Applications are due April 5, and more information can be found via posters around the school or in the Counseling Office.
In club news, several groups are meeting today during lunch. Focus meets in Ms. Woods’ room, while Knowledge Bowl meets in Mrs. Skarbek’s room 2025 for trivia practice. Tiny Tale Tellers will meet in Ms. Hayden’s room W2123, giving students a chance to help create children’s books for the community. Looking ahead, the Speech and Debate Club will meet tomorrow in Mr. Brooks’ room W1225 to introduce new leadership and plan for the upcoming school year.
Today’s Demon of the Day is Jon Gonzales, recognized for his supportive actions in the classroom. Nominated by Mrs. Kopack, Jon helped his AP Seminar classmates understand proper citation formatting, ensuring their success on an important essay. His willingness to support others reflects the values of the Demon Way.
