Every January, Troupe 1096 puts on the Underclassmen Gala, a collection of short student led work featuring underclassmen performers. This year’s performance will take place on January ninth at 6 pm, and admission is free of cost. Several of the pieces put on are written by senior students who then direct their shows, allowing for complete creative freedom. Additionally, the gala provides an excellent opportunity for young performers and technicians to showcase their skills.
When asked about what the experience performing in the gala is like, junior Finn Bone stated that “This show has really brought me closer to the underclassman as a new Junior here.” Additionally, sophomore Alayna Hoyt said that “It’s inspiring to see the communities we can create as students.”
As for the experience of directing for the show, senior Ashe Lawles shared that “I’m really happy I got to have this chance to be a director before it’s a lot of pressure, and I got to bring my ideas to life by writing my own script” and senior Nathan Greer informed me that “I don’t know what I’m doing but I’m having fun” All of which attests to the importance of student voice in theater, and the connections built through these experiences. In the words of freshman Mckenzie Oury, “This is such a fun show and you should come see us!”
