Purgatory Resort is supposed to open this weekend, on November 22. However, Durango is facing a major issue: there’s basically no snow on the mountain. Even though Purg can blow artificial snow, it still depends a lot on real storms to make the slopes safe and enjoyable. Right now, the weather has been too warm and dry for a normal start to the season.
Many locals think the opening will end up being delayed. Jade, a sophomore DHS student, said, “I think it will be delayed due to the fact we were supposed to get snow last week and it never happened. I think Purg opening is very important, we are a ski town; Purg is a huge source of income for Durango and tourism.”
Last year’s season wasn’t great, and a lot of people still remember how bad the snow was. Some people aren’t expecting much unless the weather changes fast. Jade explained, “Considering last year my standards are not high, last year was disappointing. I love skiing, but if Purg is at the quality it was last year I will go to Wolf Creek.”
Some other people are paying more attention to what it means long-term. Mira, a local DHS student, feels like the snow is coming later every year. “Climate change is definitely starting to show here,” she said. “It feels like winter keeps getting pushed back, and it’s messing with the whole ski season.”
She also talked about how the conditions affect people who want to ski or snowboard. “Blown snow can help them open, I guess, but the conditions still suck and that makes it un-fun. Everyone just wants good and real snow so it’s actually fun.”
If Purgatory does delay its opening, locals are hoping the wait won’t be long and that Durango actually gets snow. One strong storm could change everything, and Durango is keeping an eye on the forecast, hoping winter shows up soon.
