We have all seen the technology ban. Schools around the world have put in a No Cell Phone policy, taking peoples phones and restricting access. The positives for this is that teachers may be able to speak without students having digital distractions, as well as removing headphones can prevent cheating off tests with Siri. As for the negatives, people with medical conditions may not have access to their phones which carry a lot of their medical information. Students can’t reach their parents in the event of an emergency, for example a fire or sudden lockdown.
Students also can have their phones taken, put into the office that requires pick up at the end of the day or by a parent. Losing them for the day, this can be detrimental if a parent needs to talk to their child and inform them of a change of plans during the periods students can have their phones, passing period and lunch. If a parent wanted to update their child about an early pick up time or a change in plans. Without the student having their phone, the message would take a lot longer to reach the correct person.
By restricting our phones and what the school provided electronics can do it causes students in schools to become more creative and find more unique workarounds that allow students to access games and other social media platforms that may have been blocked previously. This ends in a creative cycle of students’ ingenuity leading to more being shut down and students work focused on bypassing rules.
