Valentine’s day is full of heartwarming gifts, excessive care, and a demonstration of love towards your family, partners, or even friends. At Durango High School the student council took part in Valentine’s Day this year and made a valentine for each student and teacher at the school. This act of kindness has really helped to make the students feel included and special in the holiday.
When interviewing the freshman student class president, Vivian Frazier, she felt as though it really did help to include everyone. “I really loved it, I thought it was a great way to bring connection and recognition into the school, and it was a fun project for the student council to bond on.” Frazier was very happy with the outcome and all of the students’ reactions, however Frazier did add, “I think if we were to do it again, I personally would like to make it more organized by having the valentines in last name orders or something like that, so everyone can find their hearts.”
This seemed like a fun, yet tedious process for the members of the student council. Cora Dongliner, the freshman class vice president, said, “Each person made 48 hearts, we made them in a week and a half. The process was fun, and I think we should definitely include it in our plans for next year as well.” While incoming freshmen haven’t seen something like this before, this has been a common process from past years to help celebrate the students and staff.
This has actually been a creative and fun way for the student council to connect and unite the school. The question of who came up with it roamed the halls. Mrs. Flom, the student council teacher, said, “The tradition definitely was here before I showed up. I would say it has been going for about 10 years.” While who started this remains unknown, the tradition will definitely continue in the future and holds a special place in the hearts of DHS staff and students.
