With the sun shining down on the bleachers, DHS students filed outside as members of Student Council directed students to their class sections. Red and white streamers wrapped around the railings down below and music blasted through the speakers.
Sophomore Helen Robison enjoyed having the assembly outside. “It was not as stuffy as in the gym,” she said.
It was the first StuCo-hosted pep assembly of the year and they hope to continue these on the third Thursday of each month. As the assembly got underway, StuCo members recognized those participating in sports, clubs, and the performing arts, then got down to business.
Each pep assembly will feature a different group of students at DHS, according to StuCo members. For this first assembly, the DHS Cheer Team performed one of their routines for the students. Chants of “Red, White, Black!” echoed through the stadium.
In addition, student involvement highlighted the assembly. The classes competed in the Party Song, with the sophomores winning the spirit stick, and there was also a race on the track, where two teams had to navigate cones while pushing their teammate around them. Junior Jude Alderton and freshman Travis Hugentobler won against the sophomore and senior duo.
The main goal of the assembly, however, was to reveal the Homecoming theme for this year, which is Highway to HoCo, “inspired by the fast lanes of route 66 and the fun of Disney’s Cars,” said StuCo member and junior Sophia Valdez. As members from Student Council unfurled a poster revealing the theme, the Cars soundtrack played through the speakers.
Before sending everyone back to class, the DHS Dance Team performed for the students.
Later in the day, an email was sent out regarding Homecoming information for this year. The 13-17 will be spirit week, with days such as PJ Day and Twin Day. Events will take place throughout the week, with the Homecoming parade being held on Monday, October 13, 2025, and the Homecoming tailgate and football game on October 17, 2025. The Homecoming dance will be held October 18, 2025, from 7 to 10 pm.
“Rev up your engines, hit the dance floor, and get ready for a Homecoming journey you’ll never forget!” said Valdez. Have fun, Demons!
