We’re entering a Bike To School Week between the 22nd to the 26th, and everyone is encouraged to participate! Participating is either by biking, walking, or a carpool system (like the Trolley or the Bus) to get to school! The Green Team of DHS is officially hosting this small event in attempts to make Durango just a bit more cleaner and greener!
From Brett Wilson, the leader of Green Team and Spanish Teacher, has given a few words on what he exactly wants from green team, Bike to School Week, and his overall goals. He talks about how he would “like to see more people getting to school without using a motorized vehicle, but carpooling is fine” such as using a bus. He advocated for hoping that there would be so many people biking to school that more bike racks would need to be installed. Potentially even in the car parking lot, though for now he has see no significant increase of people actually biking to school during or after this week.
Wilson even gives tips to students on how they could beat the line at favored food places around Durango High School. “Imagine you’re walking somewhere to lunch and waiting 3 minutes at the stop light crosswalk. You could already be at somewhere like Zia’s Taqueria in that same time it took you just to cross the street if you decided to use a bike instead.” With how chaotic it can be even getting out of the parking lot, you could most likely even beat people in cars who are having a struggle to exit.
Some people already do participate in using commutable services to get to school though, and are always appreciated. This event aims towards hopefully having more people commute even after the week, though with the cold season coming faster than people expected and with the rainy nights, it’s good to exercise precautions and make sure you’re being keen on the road.
No matter if you’re able to successfully commute or pool, it’s good to be mindful of ways to help keep Durango clean and green! Make sure you’re being safe when biking or walking downtown, and be wary of weather conditions when doing the following to make sure you’re being safe for both yourself and the people around you.
