DHS is in a prime spot. There are many places to eat lunch within walking distance or a short drive, and with an open campus, many students go out to eat. Where do students and staff like to go?
Happy Pappy’s is a newer pizza place, just across the road from the high school. A prime spot for good pizza. Pappy’s runs a deal during lunch for two slices of pizza and a soda for seven dollars—a great deal. Happy Pappy’s is sophomore Milo Martin’s favorite place to eat lunch. Happy Pappy’s also supports the community by hiring students and providing food for local community events.
Subway isn’t super far away and has good food, says sophomore Benji Rice. Subway is about two blocks away, and another favorite to walk to serving great subs and sweet treats.
Another hot spot is Tom’s Deli. Tom’s is about five blocks away, and a little bit longer of a walk. This is teacher Jessica Musch’s favorite place to go to lunch. Tom’s Deli specializes in sandwiches, hot and cold.
Next is local restaurant Zia Taqueria with two locations. This is sophomore David Moran’s favorite spot. Zia North is about 5 blocks away and has great food. Zia also hires teens from Durango.
Security guard Benji Danquah has a current favorite lunch spot of Homeslice. This is close to DHS and serves a good variety of pizza.
Sage Fresh Eats is another popular hotspot that is just a short drive from the high school. Sage serves a variety of meal options, such as salads, bowls, and sandwiches. This is senior Sunny’s favorite place to eat.
Next is City Market. Security guard Steve White has a favorite of the deli’s fried chicken. City Market offers a variety of foods for lunch, including sushi, sandwiches, salads, pastries, donuts, and more.
If you bring lunch to school, Rank Park is a great spot to eat, as it is just a short walk behind the softball fields. This is junior Ellie Bruckbauer’s favorite spot to eat when she brings lunch. Freshman Rorri Armenta likes to eat anywhere outside.
DHS also has a great cafeteria with good food. This is free for all students for the fall semester, and the future of this program will be voted on in November 2025.
Another attraction to students is Starbucks. Starbucks specializes in drinks such as hot coffees, iced coffees, chai, frappes, and other treats, as well as some pastries and other small foods.
Lastly, Taco Bell is just a couple of blocks from DHS. Its menu consists of a variety of food choices, such as tacos and burritos, as well as drinks.
