Aleia Fenberg and Marie Baker, both sophomores, were the only girls from the team to qualify from regionals. Girls from the team were more satisfied this season than last season because of the greater variety with whom they wrestle at tournaments. The girls team grew with over 10 new girls this season.
Baker says that there were more teams at tournaments this season compared to seasons prior. Baker talks about the more spaced out brackets this year with new faces to wrestle against. “I felt like this year was kind of easier since the districts were kind of like spread out.”
Lily Dominguez, a new wrestler, talks about her time on the team after being told she should look into joining girls wrestling. She talks about the community built within the team. Dominguez had never done wrestling before, but this year she decided to join the team. Dominguez says, “Everyone’s super nice and really funny and welcoming.”
Lillian Fenberg, a sophomore, talks about the growth of the sport. She believes the growth is positive and more girls can improve the team. Fenberg and her sister Aleia Fenberg have both been wrestling for 3 years, starting in 8th grade at Escalante Middle school. Lillian Fenberg believes the sport is growing and that there was a big increase in numbers this season. “Definitely a lot different from the last season, cause like, there were less people, and even in like all the tournaments we went to, there were smaller teams, and this year, it’s a lot different with more girls.”
All in all, this year the team saw massive growth in numbers with girls who wanted to try wrestling. The growth in this sport over Colorado is rapid and as years pass, more and more girls are coming out to try the sport. Wrestling can help build a sense of community and helps bring people together over things others may not understand if they are not doing the sport. The Lady Demon Wrestling team is growing each year and hopes to send even more girls to state next year.
