Did you know that if you go to Google maps or go to the maps on your IOS device the gulf of Mexico has been changed to the gulf of America. However, while the United States recognizes the name change,Mexico still sees it as The Gulf of Mexico and for the rest of the world, both names are used.. In light of this recent name change, students at Durango High School share their own opinions about this change.
DHS student, Tristen Williams who is a Freshman in high school is of the opinion that there is no point in changing the name because changing the name hasn’t actually changed anything.Williams said, “It’s absolutely pointless because all they’re doing is changing the name and it doesn’t have any significance.” Williams also thinks that the U.S might be creating tension with other nations, like Mexico, and that it doesn’t make sense why President Trump changed the name of the Gulf. Williams stated, “I believe that this could cause some tension with Mexico just because we’re claiming something that has been The Gulf of Mexico, and we’re just throwing our name right on it.” This indicates that he thinks that the U.S is just put its name right on top of the Gulf of Mexico.
Many are wondering why President Trump chose to rename the Gulf of Mexico According to NBC Chicago, “Trump said that the Gulf plays a “pivotal role” in the security and economic prosperity of the United States, and should therefore be named after the U.S”. Another reason why Trump chose to do this act is because he also said that “he renamed the body of water to ‘restore American pride’ during the early days of his administration.” Trump really chose this because he thinks that this will ensure future generations of America to celebrate the legacy of its heroes and historic assets.
Overall, this article shows both sides of what people think about the renaming of the Gulf and why. For more information about why Trump chose to change the name go to https://www.nbcchicago.com/news/politics/why-did-trump-change-the-name-of-the-gulf-of-mexico/3672866/
