Durango High School has a rich and mysterious history, from its founding in 1885 to its current status as a pillar of education and community pride. But one question often lingers: Why are we called the “Demons”? The answer may not be immediately obvious, but it’s deeply tied to the history of Durango itself, a town known for its mysterious and eerie beginnings. Yet, despite our unique mascot, Durango High School stands as a beacon of opportunity, excellence, and a commitment to providing the best for our students.
The origins of the “Demon” mascot can be traced back to Durango’s early history, where the town’s landmarks bear names that evoke the supernatural. One of the earliest examples is “Purgatory,” a name given to a nearby creek by a witty farmer in the late 1800s. This name was inspired by the Rio de las Animas Perdidas, or the River of Lost Souls, named by Spanish explorers after a group of settlers who mysteriously disappeared there. The theme of the “demonic” and the mysterious permeates the history of the area, and some believe this eerie theme was carried over when Durango High School adopted the “Demon” mascot.
However, while our mascot may have an air of mystery, what truly defines Durango High School is our commitment to our students and their futures. Despite the bold and fierce symbol of the Demon, our focus is squarely on providing the best educational opportunities possible.
Durango High School has earned its reputation as a school that strives for excellence, constantly working to offer its students the tools and opportunities to succeed. From academic achievements to athletics, arts, and extracurricular programs, we are dedicated to being one of the top high schools in Colorado and the entire nation. Our school offers a wide array of Advanced Placement courses, career and technical education programs, and a strong emphasis on community involvement. We believe in preparing our students for success both in the classroom and beyond, providing them with skills that will serve them well in college, careers, and life.

As Principal Mr. Hoerl always says, “At Durango High School, we don’t just strive for excellence—we embody it every day. We’re more than just a school; we’re a community dedicated to providing our students with the best opportunities to grow, learn, and succeed. Whether in academics, athletics, or the arts, we aim to develop well-rounded individuals who are ready to take on the world.”
The Demon mascot symbolizes the strength, resilience, and determination qualities that our students demonstrate daily. But it’s the dedication of the staff, the variety of programs available, and the tireless support of the community that truly sets Durango High School apart.
Whether you’re a freshman just starting your high school journey, an athlete competing for state championships, an artist showcasing your creativity, or a member of the debate team, you’re a part of this legacy. We may be the Demons, but our focus is on lifting up our students and helping them achieve greatness.
As we continue to make our mark on history, we are not only building upon the legacy of the past but also shaping a future full of opportunity, success, and pride. So, let’s continue to embrace our Demon spirit, striving for excellence in everything we do, and showing the world that we are not just students, we are a part of a tradition that will continue to thrive for generations to come.
Let’s make history, Demons. Together, we are destined for greatness!
