Not many people know what actually happens in the Fellowship of Christian Athletes. To some, it’s just another school club, but for those involved, it’s a place where students come together to talk about their experiences, share challenges, and support each other. Whether they’re discussing faith, life on and off the field, or just connecting, FCA provides a setting for conversations that don’t often happen elsewhere on campus. For those who show up, it’s a unique part of their school experience that goes beyond the usual routines.
FCA leader Daniel Latham says, “It’s a community of people that think the same way as me when it comes to morals and the way we should treat each other.” Latham is very passionate about FCA and has spoken in front of the community before. When asked about what he would like to say to people who don’t go, he said that they should “feel the waters; it’s free lunch.” FCA provides lunch so that they can attract more people to come.
A FCA regular, Aaron Debenedictus says that a main point of FCA is that “you just get to grow in your relationship with God,” and that creates a community of like-minded people to hang out with. He also says that “it’s a place where a bunch of Christians get to come together.” Many people come to FCA because of the community and many also come to try to get closer to their God.
For some people, like Colt Christofferson, a non-member of FCA, it is “just a place to connect just like any other club.” FCA is a great opportunity to make connections with other people and provides a subject to talk about as well. When asked about what they do in FCA, Christofferson said, “I have no idea.” FCA is very popular, but somehow, some students do not know what it is about. Christofferson also stated that “it probably affects [people who go] positively just for the social aspect.” Clubs and meetings are a great way for relationships to be built and is a very relaxed space that is easy to make friends in.
All in all, FCA is still a bit foreign for people who don’t go, and has a positive impact on people who attend. Many people go for the food, but others go for the connections and all people are welcomed into the doors.
If you are interested in checking it out, FCA is located in the fairgrounds building right next to the senior center and meets every Wednesday at lunch.
