The Durango High School Marching Band struck a triumphant note at the recent Colorado West competition, showcasing their dedication and hard work with impressive results. Low brass section leader Oren Hawk shares, “If you put a lot of time and effort into something, it makes it worthwhile. Even in a challenging division like 4A, with a smaller band, we have to fight for it.” This year’s competition was a turning point for the marching band.
Their performance of “Black Swan” wowed both the audience and judges. The crowd cheered louder than ever, energizing the musicians and boosting their confidence. Fellow band member Lelo Wheeler adds, “The goal has always been to make the band proud and hold ourselves accountable.” Impressive scores reflect their hard work and determination, inspiring everyone involved.
Senior Snare player Keegan Oury reflects on the show, stating, “It really shows how strong we are as a band and represents our hard work and dedication. Over the past few years, we’ve refined our playing, and ‘Black Swan’ beautifully symbolizes the growth that comes from commitment. It’s about accepting who you truly are, like transforming from a white swan into a black swan.”
Despite their success, the band is not resting on their achievements. After qualifying for state last year, the members are dedicated to perfecting their performance for the upcoming regional competition on Thursday, October 17. Daily rehearsals starting at 7 a.m. every weekday are filled with intense practice sessions, showing their teamwork, and camaraderie as they refine every note and formation in “Black Swan.” Band Director Alexander Finley remarks, “If you add up all the hours we spent together working on this show, it’s really kind of crazy to actually see that number.”
As they prepare for regionals, tenor player Lelo Wheeler admits, “I’m scared but also excited—I really believe in us this year. The people make it worth it.”
The support from the Durango community has been overwhelming. The marching band is gaining recognition from other students, including cheerleaders and football players. Football Coach Griffin Gans notes, “They are starting to recognize the importance of the band’s presence and support during games.” Local businesses have rallied behind the band, providing sponsorships and encouragement as they gear up for the regional competition. The enthusiasm of family and friends in the stands has also fueled their determination.
Wheeler mentions the collaboration with the cheer and dance teams: “This year, we’ve had a lot more involvement with them, which I’m really happy about.” Coach Gans emphasizes, “It’s been a point to make sure that we’re thanking those that are playing for us. The marching band puts in a lot of hard work to sound great on Friday nights, and it’s crucial they feel appreciated.” This focus on gratitude has fostered a positive atmosphere among both groups.
As the marching band continues to rehearse, they have planned fundraisers to cover costs for uniforms and travel. They invite everyone to join their upcoming events, where you can enjoy great music while supporting our talented students.
The Durango High School Marching Band has shown that great things can be achieved with hard work, determination, and community support. Hawk sums up the team’s aspirations, stating, “I really want to make state and feel that our section did a good job together.” As they gear up for regionals on October 17, we can’t wait to see how far they’ll fly with “Black Swan.” Let’s cheer them on as they soar toward new victories!
