Demon Sports Update: September 24th

Gillian Holmgren, Online Head Editor

Sept 21st  45-0 Win vs. Farmington HS
Dawson Marcum and the Durango Demons took the sting out of the Farmington Scorpions early Friday night, as all phases of the game clicked for Durango High School. Behind 156 first-half rushing yards from Marcum and stifling defense that held Farmington to less than 100 yards of total offense in the first half, the Demons (3-2) took a 26-0 lead into halftime against the visiting Scorpions (2-3). The onslaught continued in the second half, as DHS secured a 45-0 victory.
9/21 3-2 Loss @ GJ Central HS
9/22 3-0 Win @ Grand Junction HS
The Durango High School volleyball team narrowly fell to Grand Junction Central on Friday night in a five-set thriller in Grand Junction, as the Warriors won 3-2. The scores were 25-21, 25-22, 24-26, 22-25 and 15-12.“(We) played really well and grew up tonight as a team,” Vogt said. “We never quit fighting, and I’m so proud of that. We had some calls that did not go our way in the fifth set, but I’m so proud of how well the girls handled themselves and competed tonight.”
The Durango High School volleyball team ended their road trip to Grand Junction with a successful sweep over the Tigers Saturday afternoon, winning in straight sets, 25-18, 25-22 and 26-24. The Demons (2-6, 1-2 5A/4A Southwestern League) were led by Emmy Romero, who had 16 assists and led the offense on the afternoon.
Boys Soccer(9-1):
9/19 3-2 Win @ Montrose HS
9/22 1-0 Win vs. Fruita Monument HS
League rivals met on the soccer field Wednesday in Montrose. After an early barrage from the host Indians, Durango High School fought back to earn a fourth consecutive win. The DHS boys (8-1, 3-0 5A/4A Southwestern League) were struck early by the play of Montrose (3-5, 1-1 SWL), but a goal from Jack Beattie helped the team carry momentum into halftime with the match tied 1-1. The Demons would take a 3-1 lead in the final 10 minutes of the match before the game ended in a 3-2 win.

Sometimes the largest stats in soccer don’t show up on the scoreboard. That was the case with the Colorado High School Activities Association Class 4A fourth-ranked Durango High School boys soccer team’s 1-0 win against Fruita Monument Saturday on afternoon at Durango High School. The Demons (9-1, 4-0 5A/4A Southwestern League) registered 24 shots and found the back of the net only once, thanks to a Leland Heineke goal.

Bye Week
Boys Tennis(2-8):
9/121 Loss vs. Grand Junction HS
9/15 Loss vs. CS Coronado HS

The Durango High School tennis team fell in a doubleheader to Grand Junction on Friday afternoon at Durango High School with losses of 7-0 and 6-1. The only team that won on the day for the Demons was in the second match against the Tigers, when the No. 4 doubles team of Andy Rodriguez and Calan Barnhart won in a three-set thriller, 2-6, 6-4 and 10-6 in the third set tiebreaker.

The Durango High School boys tennis team ended the regular season on a high note Saturday morning at Durango High School, as the Demons defeated Grand Junction Central with a 5-2 victory to sweep the season series against the Warriors. The Demons (2-8, 2-3 4A Region 8) won in all three singles positions, and head coach Alan Batiste switched up his lineup for Saturday’s match after the team dropped a doubleheader to Grand Junction on Friday afternoon.
Boys Golf:
As a team, the Durango High School golfers didn’t qualify for the state tournament through Monday’s 4A Region 2 tournament. Still, the Demons will send a team to the state meet. Only the top two teams automatically qualify for the state championship tournament, but the next 13 individuals not on those teams also qualify. The Demons had three players, Ethan Whidden, Anthony Flint and Levi Tichi, fall into that group of 13, giving the Demons a team of three to score with at The Club at Flying Horse golf course Oct. 1-2 in Colorado Springs.
